Giraffatopia
3D Platformer with a literal twist!
Role: Lead Designer, Producer, Programmer, Artist
Engine: Unity 5
"Giraffatopia is a unique 3D platformer where you use the utility of a Giraffe's long neck to hook and swing around obstacles in interactive zany courses. This project was made in 3 months and was part of my DePaul University capstone."
Design Process
Giraffatopia started out as a game where you played as a Giraffe whose main goal was to ring as many donuts as possible using its neck. It was a noble first attempt but it wasn't as much fun as I'd hoped. Instead of trying to polish an experience that was dull...I decided to take the Giraffe character and move it in a new direction.
That GIF right there is ultimately where the project went, let me give some context. I created a gameplay scenario where you needed to hook on objects using your "neck" to progress through the level.
Here is the final iteration on the Giraffe character. The giraffe neck is used for traversal such as sliding and swinging on a pole to gain height. The neck is also used to bring things down with the Giraffe's heavy weight. Lastly, it can be used as an attack move to hit things down! Looking back through this progression, it's crazy to see how far it's come. You can see some of this zany action in the video below.
